See the vibrant Kilptown - birth of the Freedom Charter. Visit the Hector Peterson Memorial, named after 13 year old Hector Peterson, the young schoolboy who was the first victim to die of gunshot wounds during the June 1976 Soweto uprising. Shrouded in myth and controversy vibrant Soweto is a city of surprises and contrast.
Gold Reef City - Visit Gold Reef City and see a combination of a historical and amusement park. On the grounds of a former gold mine, houses and entire streets have been rebuilt true to the originals from the gold-rush times, most of the employees of the resort are dressed in costumes of that era. Revisit a replica of a gold mining town, complete with Saloons, General stores and sweet shops. You can even take a 200m trip underground and watch gold diggers in action. This very shaft used to produce more gold than any other mine in the world. Perhaps take a nostalgic trip on the steam train or ride a penny-farthing.
Apartheid Museum - Telling the story of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. The Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid: The racially prejudiced system that blighted much of its progress and the triumph of reason which crowned half a century of struggle, this museum has already become the city's leading tourist attraction. This is a never to be missed moving experience. The history of the old South Africa in this unique museum, dark images, sounds, and the atmosphere prevalent in the troubled era resonate and linger in the senses. Pretoria
Pretoria is known as South Africa's Administrative Capital, with part of Government headquarters situated here. It is a historically rich area, which saw its earlier occupiers flee from Mzilikazi's plundering, taxing armies, the arrival of the Voortrekker's and the Anglo/Boer wars. Visit Church Square, The Voortrekker Monument, Kruger or Melrose house. Enjoy the tranquil, pristine gardens of the Union Buildings "a masterpiece of its own time". Union Buildings - South Africa's most prominent building - seat of the government and the presidency - may for security reasons not be visited inside. But it is worthwhile to see it from the outside. Standing in front of the building you will enjoy a wonderful view of the city of Pretoria/Tshwane lying in the valley below. The Union Buildings are surrounded on all sides by magnificent gardens.
Kruger House - President Paul Kruger lived in this splendid house near Church Square from 1884 to 1901. It was the first Pretorian residence with electricity and telephone. It is furnished in the original style and shows many exhibits from the life of this very popular Boer president, for example his State coach and his private railway carrier.
National Botanical Garden - Pretoria's botanical garden is situated on an area of 76 hectares, the park renders an excellent insight into the diversity of the South African flora in the different climate zones. Particularly impressive is the comprehensive Herbarium and the Succulents' Garden.
Melrose House - This building dates back to the year 1884 is one of the most beautiful examples of Victorian houses in South Africa. In 1902 the peace treaty of Vereeniging, which ended the Anglo-Boer War, was signed here. Today the museum displays original English furniture from the 19th century as well as porcelain and other accessories of that time.
Voortrekker Monument - This "place of pilgrimage" of the Afrikaans population lies on a hill outside of Pretoria. The monument was built in 1949 in remembrance of the Great Trek and the Blood River Battle.

Pretoria Art Museum - Art lovers come to their own in the Pretoria Art Museum. The house was founded in 1964 and nowadays displays more than 6000 objects - paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography's, mostly by South African artists.
National Cultural History Museum - South Africa's most important museum for cultural history. Voted most interesting are the ethnological department and the collection of prehistoric rock paintings.
Transvaal Museum of Natural History - The Transvaal Museum of Natural History houses Fine collections of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and fossils. Precious and semiprecious stones.
Cradle of Mankind/Humankind
The Cradle of Humankind is a World Heritage Site first named by UNESCO in 1999. The scientific value of this area lies in the fact that these sites provide us with a window into the past, to a time when our earliest ancestors were evolving and changing. This site currently occupies 183 square miles; it contains a complex of limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves, where the 2.3-million year-old fossil Australopithecus africanus (nicknamed "Mrs. Ples") was found in 1947, as well as the Wonder Cave. Sterkfontein Caves - You can visit the souvenir shop, auditorium, and hominid exhibition hall with interactive exhibits, view some of the ongoing excavations from a wooden walkway, and take a look-in at the laboratory where scientists examine their fossil finds. Forty percent of all human ancestor fossil finds have been made here, including several of the world's most famous and important fossils - among them Mrs Ples (now believed to be Master Ples), dating back 2.5-million years, and Little Foot, an almost complete ape-man skeleton between 3 and 3.5-million years old (though a recent study puts it at just over 4-million years old). A further 500 hominid fossils and over 9 000 stone tools have been excavated in the area, and excavations will probably continue for another 100 years.
Wondercave - Explore underground caverns with stalagmites and stalactites. The enormous cave chamber with a volume of 46 000m Is believed to be 2.2 million years old. This cave has the best example in the region of a relatively young talus cone (a few thousand years old), which helps us understand how the older caves in the area were filled in. Wonder Cave contains drip stone formations as beautiful as those in the Cango Caves. It also has a resident bat population.
Rhino Park & Lion Nature Reserve - Situated at the foot of the Zwartkop Mountains, the park is home to three of the big five and other species. View a variety of African wildlife. Animals that you may see include: Lion, Buffalo, Rhino, Cheetah, Wild Dog, Crocodile, Hippopotamus and a variety of South African antelope.

Lion Park - More than 100 lions can be found in the Park with the rare white lion being the main attraction. The animals are viewed from a vehicle and there are excellent photographic opportunities. Different large African carnivore species are found, including hyenas, cheetahs and wild dogs. Herbivore species to be found in the park include black wildebeest, zebra, springbok, blesbok, gemsbok, and giraffe. Take a walk through the fascinating Cub World and view various animal species. This is hugely popular for all ages, so do not miss out on the unique opportunity to play with the lion cubs and to learn about lions from well-trained guides.
Lesedi Cultural Village - Ululating women accompanied by drums and stamping of the feet, revoke in your animal instincts at its best. A multi cultural village that depicts the traditional lives of the Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi and Basotho tribes. Riveting folklore and participate in energetic dance. Ndebele artists displaying their creations. Lesedi is a unique endeavor: it is an attempt to introduce people to many facets of South African culture. Elephant Sanctuary - Meet the elephants during an exciting, educationally program. An experienced guide who guides a small group of guests through the Sanctuary hosts the program. The guide will impart a wealth of knowledge to you about elephants in general, as well as afford you the privilege of getting to know the elephants personally. Touch, feel and walk trunk in hand with these magnificent animals, for the very adventurous why not try an elephant ride. The program is conducted on foot, and so it is advisable to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes.
De Wilt Cheetah Centre - The Cheetah is Africa's fastest cat and can reach speeds of up to 120 km/h over a very short distance. You will be taken on an educational tour of the Cheetah's getting very close to these wonderful animals. On this tour you will also see the rare and complex wild dogs, one of the most endangered animals on the planet.

Pilanesberg National Park Safari - Scouting for animals with Game Ranger using an open Jeep. Your hair will cramp, your heart will pump fast, and the most interesting thing is that after the drive you will want to come back. This outstanding 580sq km Reserve is one of the largest National Parks in South Africa and established on an extinct volcano. The big 5 as well as various other animals, bird and plant species are just a game drive away.
Sun City - In an extinct volcano crater adjoining the Pilanesberg National Park lies Sun City and the Lost City, South Africa's answer to Las Vegas. A fantasy world conjured out of myths & legends of Africa. Tranquil streams and waterfalls abound in the mysterious jungle. Valley of waves with it's palm beaches. Legend tells us that the Palace of the Lost City was built as the royal residence of an ancient civilization of South Africa, but was destroyed by an earthquake. Mpumalanga
This is Shangaan territory, which shares borders with Swaziland and Mozambique. It incorporates the larger and more populated southern part of the Kruger National Park. Pilgrim's rest is a recreated mining town which offers some insights into the gold rush that hit this area a century ago. There are magnificent range of landscapes - with the cool, rugged grasslands of the escarpment falling away sharply to the tropical humidity of the lowveld. Dramatic waterfalls stud the cliffsides. Here you'll find all the tropical crops growing - from bananas and avocados to mangoes, litchis and macadamia nuts, as well as lots of coffee and tea. Dullstroom is South Africa's unofficial capital of trout fishing, and visitors come from all over the world to test their skills in the rivers and dams of the area.
Click to open and closeKruger National Park - From relatively humble beginnings, the Kruger National Park has become one of the jewels in the Southern African tourism crown, hosting more than 5 000 well-satisfied visitors a day, it is South Africa's largest National Park, estimated to be 2 000 000 H.A. in size. The vast, heat-hazed lowland plain, which the park occupies, has always been big-game country. It stretches for 350 kilometers from the Crocodile River in the south, along the Mozambique border to the confluence of the Limpopo and Levuvhu rivers in the north, the point where the South African, Mozambican and Zimbabwean borders meet. Enjoy awe-inspiring Game Drives & relaxed Sun-downers in peaceful surrounds This world-renowned Park ranks among the best in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, this national park is truly the flagship of the South African National Parks.
Pilgrims Rest - This village in it entirety has been declared a national monument. It began life as a lively mining settlement that made its appearance almost overnight after the discovery of alluvial gold in the surrounding hills. In it heyday, it accommodated about 1 600 diggers. The wood-and iron miners' cottages have been restored and the Digging-site Museum, about two kilometers out of town include prospectors' tents, a jail tent (complete with stocks), and wattle-and-daub huts.
Blyde River Canyon - The water tumbles through a deep and spectacular gorge, part of which is dammed, most of which runs through the Blyde River Nature Reserve. There are a number of wonderful view sites from which to enjoy the dramatic canyon with its towering red and gold sandstone cliffs. The Three Rondavels, also known as the Chief's Wives, dominate the northern section of the canyon.
Gods Window - A short walk through the indigenous shrubs to the God's Window and Wonderview sites, with wooden platforms that offer the most stunning vistas over the Escarpment. Here the land drops way almost vertically to the Lowveld, and standing at God's Window, at an altitude of around two kilometers, leaves you feeling as if you are, literally, on top of the world.
Bourke's Luck pot-holes - Formed by the confluence of the Treur and Blyde rivers. A moonscape of deep hollows and channels. Some of the Potholes are six meters deep and have been formed over centuries of continuous scouring by sand and pebbles carried along by the river.
Sudwala Caves and Dinosaur Park - Between Waterval-Onder and Nelspruit are some of the oldest caves in the world. Pass through their main entrance, which is in the forest that flanks the Mankelekele ('High-on-Hogh') mountain, and you'll find yourself in an amazing labyrinth that takes you down into the bowels of the earth. It is believed that the caverns were formed over a period of more than a million years, during which water seeped slowly through the rock and dissolved the dolomite. The wonderful drip stone formations have such evocative, and descriptive names as the Screaming Monster, the Weeping Madonna, Nick the Devil, Samson's Pillar and the Rocket Silo. Embedded in the roof of one of the caves are collenia, strange, saucer-like depressions of fossilized colonies of blue-green algae that were thought to have lived some 2 0000 million years ago. Tours of the caves last for about an hour and a half. The Dinosaur Park, with its extraordinary sculptures and models of some of the fearsome creatures that roamed the earth millions of years ago. The models are scattered throughout the park, among indigenous trees and ancient cycads.
Kwazulu-Natal
The Zulu Kingdom is a kaleidoscope of natural wonders, ultra-modern facilities, fascinating glimpses of a multi-cultured people and a rich history - all set against a majestic backdrop of sun, sea, mountains and sky. Amazing names like Umdloti, Mtubatuba, Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift, Amanzimtoti and Pongola hint at the rich history of this region, which was the scene of bloody clashes between Zulu, Boer, Xhosa and British warriors.

The Hluhluwe and/or Umfolozi game parks - These are Malaria-free, which is ideal for visitors wanting to see the Big 5 (especially black and white rhino), up close. Walking tours are best - always accompanied by an experienced ranger, of course.
Drakensburg - Mountain-lovers will enjoy the Drakensburg, which are separated from the white sandy beaches of the coast by a few hundred kilometers of undulating green hills, generally known as the Natal Midlands. Here you'll find the Midlands Meander - an arts, crafts, and restaurant route, well serviced by luxurious accommodation establishments.
Durban - The main hub of Kwazulu-Natal is a bustling port city full of colour and spice, largely due to the presence of the largest Indian population outside India itself.
