The list of challenging world class Johannesburg golf courses is impressive with a number of them having played host to the European tour and the South African Sunshine Tour.
Whether on holiday or on business, your biggest difficulty will be in choosing between the golf courses (listed in alphabetical order):
1. Bryanston Country Club: Par 73 - 6576 meters with many water hazards.
2. Crown Mines Golf Course: Par 72 - 6914 meters is a long and rustic course.
3. Dainfern Golf Course: Par 72 - 6580 meters long was designed by Gary Player to incorporate the Jukskei River with a number of the holes crossing the river.
4. Gary Player Country Club: is part of the enormous Sun City complex and lies next to the Pilanesberg National Park. It ranks amongst the very best in the world, and certainly one of the longest. Note: this golf course is not in the Johannesburg area, but well worth a mention here.
5. Glendower Golf Course: Par 72 - 6770 meters with a series of 85 bunkers, plenty trees and water features on 11 of the 18-holes with lush vegetation, fine views and exceptional greens.
6. Glenvista Country Club: a prominent feature is the 18 excellent bent grass greens, incorporating 400 indigenous trees with five dams rich in bird life.
7. Houghton Country Club: is one of the top courses in South Africa regularly used to host the South African Open and chosen to host the inaugural Alfred Dunhill Challenge. The course is home to a large number of birds and has a wealth of South African flora and fauna.
8. Kyalami Golf Course: is located close to the famous Kyalami Grand Prix racing circuit. It features some superb holes amongst its 18 with water providing a challenge not for the faint hearted.
9. Lenasia Country Club: this 18-hole course built along the Klip River. The sixth hole is a challenging par 3 - 200 meters long and is protected by the River. The 18th is a par 5 that almost demands three drives to the green because of the difficult position of a dam.
10. Modderfontein Golf Course: Par 71 - 6 186 meters with 11 of the 18-holes featuring water is rated as one of the top 20 in South Africa.
11. Randpark Golf Club: features two superb 18-hole championship golf courses and is the biggest club in the southern hemisphere with 2 800 members.
12. Reading Golf Course: 18-hole, 6500 meters long - par of 71course in a typical woodlands layout with water features on 10 of the 18 holes.
13. Roodepoort Country Club: 18-hole course designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby. The course is extremely tuff with 70 bunkers to be avoided.
14. Royal Johannesburg: is one of only two South African courses listed in the World Atlas of Golf and has hosted the South African Open on numerous occasions. The east course is 6 660 meters long - par 72 and the west course is 6 351 meters long - par 71.
15. Soweto Country Club: 18-holes, 6560 meters - par 72 is located in the most historically significant area in South Africa. The club, created only 3 years after the student riots of 1976, is now part of this vibrant city. The course has recently been remodeled.
16. Wanderers Golf Course: 6274 meters - par of 72 is a scenic 18-hole course alongside the famous Wanderers Cricket Stadium, centrally located in the city of Johannesburg.
