Living African Culture

Located in the rocky Magaliesberg hills 45 minutes from Johannesburg, The Lesedi Cultural Village is a multi cultural village developed as a tourist attraction in 1995. Lesedi meaning "light" features the tribal villages, ancestral traditions, history and culture, including the art, song and dance of five distinctly different cultural villages:

Zulu (warrior nation) are the largest South African ethnic group who live mainly in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. Their houses are characteristic beehive huts.

Xhosa (proud nation) are a group of people originally from south-east region of South Africa. Their traditional crafts include beadwork, weaving, and pottery and their houses are identified as a thatched hut with distinct white blankets.

Pedi (warm hearted nation) refers to a ruling group which established its dominance over other groups of Northern Sotho in the 18th century, and to the culture and lifestyle of that group. They are described as rhythmic musicians.

Basotho (mountain dwelling nation) is a population native to Lesotho who is well-known for their coloured Blankets and straw hats.

Ndebele (artistic nation) are a group made up of the tribes of people living in South Africa and Zimbabwe. They are famous for their colorfully crafted homes.

Included in the village is a Spaza shop (small residential shop), Shebeen (urban cultural bar) and a craft market.

The Tour:

Experience the warmth of true rural African culture. The Lesedi cultural experience starts with a visit to the Ndebele village see murals decorating the walls & courtyard, with a multimedia presentation covering the cultural history and the colorful origins of the rainbow nation of South Africa. This is then followed by a tour of the Zulu, Basotho, Xhosa and Pedi homesteads with participative traditional song and tribal dancing demonstrations from all five homesteads. Guests are enlightened by the traditions and fascinating customs dating back to the ancestors of the South African nation.

The Feast:

The superbly decorated Nyama Choma restaurant serves a buffet of traditional South African dishes and delicacies. This is a well worth inclusion in your visit to the village.
